Well, ACEN came and went and I gotta tell you… Anime conventions are WAY different from the comic book conventions I’m used to.
The first and most obvious difference are the amount of costumes that you’ll see… sure, any and every convention has a good amount of people dressing up as their favorite characters and the complexity of their costumes will vary from mediocre to very professional, but here, WHOA! It is fair to say that a good 80% of visitors were dressed up as characters! and most of them were costumes that you could tell were carefully crafted and worn… I mean, these people even stayed in character while dressed! for example: if a person that was dressed as, say, Pikachu, found another person dressed as Ash, they would stay in character for the time they would be around each other! at first I thought these were people that knew each other but no… they just knew each other’s character and acted accordingly.
Another mind blowing difference is the amount of women vs. the amount of men there… I really think about 80% of the audience there were women… and about 80% of those women were dressed up as characters! (I thought I was exaggerating the numbers a bit, but friends are telling me I’m actually being a bit conservative). And these were girls that knew anime spot on! they knew characters, storylines, merchandise… everything!
There were many more differences, from the way you register to get a table, to how long the show lasts (it is, for all means and purposes, a 3 day NON-STOP event!) but I’m not gonna bore you with any more details… please go check the photos in the SpacePunks Fanpage and, if you have the time, leave a comment as well!
